History: Wiki

Coming from a large family in Cuba, Lance is, at the start of the series, a somewhat poorly-performing cadet pilot at the Galaxy Garrison, a military school whose students study the various aspects of space travel. Following one of his classmates, he winds up caught up in the events that lead to him discovering, in short order, that his school was covering up a mission gone wrong, aliens are real, and he has been Capital-C Chosen by a magical spaceship shaped like a giant blue lion to be its pilot.

He and the others from the Garrison, soon dubbed the Paladins of Voltron, discover an alien plot to destroy and/or rule the universe, being headed by a Galra (a sort of furry purple koala-cat alien, but buff and evil) named Zarkon, who will stop at nothing to capture the lions and control the ultimate weapon that they combine to form: Voltron. They're joined by the last surviving Alteans (mostly humanoid, and frequently surprisingly buff, but not evil, aliens with varying inexplicable Commonwealth accents), Coran and Princess Allura, some psychic space mice, and a flying castle spaceship in their mission to defeat Zarkon and defend the universe through the power of teamwork and friendship.

Being lost in space, who-knows-how-far away from home, Lance and the other Paladins struggle, at first, with their newfound responsibilities. They undergo training to hone their skills and learn how to work together as five individual parts of one whole giant robot, learning lessons in Teamworkâ„¢ all the while. Along the course their mission, the group meets multiple alien races, seeking out allies in their fight against the Galra. Lance, being the suave ladies man that he is, tries to get with all of them.

But as time progresses, things become more and more grim. The team is split briefly by an unstable wormhole, they face hard personal realizations, and, in Lance's case, his increasing homesickness for Earth and personal insecurities that he covers up with bravado and shouting become more and more constant thoughts. For every victory Team Voltron scores, it seems that another loss is right around the corner, particularly where the season two finale leaves us: with their leader Shiro disappearing from his Lion and presumed to be dead.

Personality:

So the thing about Lance is, he's kind of a disaster. When we first meet him, his cockiness and loud, egotistical, "I can do no wrong" attitude leads to him and his Garrison teammates, Hunk and Pidge, failing a training simulation in front of the rest of their class, who are all too happy to criticize their teamwork. In fact, it seems like Lance is more focused on the prestige of being a pilot moreso than he is dedicated to actually studying, only seeming to be interested in girls, girls, and hanging out with his bros, but ideally with girls around too.

It becomes quickly clear, though, that Lance's attitude is a lot for show. Upon being reintroduced to a former Garrison student, Keith, it's revealed that Lance was previously a cargo class student pilot, and has only recently been bumped up into fighter class, following Keith dropping out. Naturally, Lance decides this makes them rivals, much to Keith's confusion, and he takes any opportunity to remind everyone of their fierce competition. He has an innate sense that he has to prove himself to everyone around him, including himself, leading him to question more and more what he really brings to the team.

Which isn't to say he's bad at what he does! On the contrary, his quick reflexes and skill for improvisation make him a skilled pilot--even moreso since undergoing training with the Blue Lion--and an excellent marksman, serving as the ranged weapons expert for Team Voltron. His sharpshooting skills are so precise that on one mission, he perfectly times a nearly impossible shot to rescue someone. And while he clearly resents having "only" been a cargo pilot in the past, his background seems to give him a calmer foundation, making him a surprisingly good strategist, though this often goes unnoticed by his teammates, even when it's his plans that save the day.

As the pilot of the Blue Lion, the friendliest and one of the most agile of the five lions, Lance's personality is mirrored in that of his robot space cat. He's outgoing, frequently to the point of annoyance in his insistence with flirting shamelessly, particularly with anyone he assumes to be a cute girl. This frequently gets him into trouble, like the time that Nyma--one of a group of alien space pirates who the group were scammed by--took advantage of his amorous advances to leave him tied to a tree and steal his Lion.

Although they may get him into trouble, his friendly demeanour and antics do often prove to be a morale boost for his friends. Lance is quick to provide a joke or comedic relief to lighten a tense moment. But more so than just that, Lance has proven time and again that he'll do anything for his friends, even to the point of endangering himself. He is nearly sucked out of an airlock when he thinks a friend is in danger, and has quite literally thrown himself in front of explosions and enemies to shield others, even those he's just met. Despite clearly missing his large family back on Earth, and feeling lost in the role of defender of the universe that he sometimes doubts that he truly deserves, Lance's resolve never cracks. He's always there to put on a brave face, or crack a joke, and Get Shit Done.

Setting:

Lance is really used to space travel by now, but he won't be a huge fan of being even further away from home, as he's frequently homesick. He is, however, incredibly enthusiastic about space exploration and meeting new alien races… particularly if those alien races are attractive, because he would really, really like to get with an alien. He's also a strong team player, and will be glad to help out others in need.

Abilities/Skills:

Lance has a background in cargo ship piloting as well as fighter piloting, which he has the most recent hands-on experience, piloting both the Blue Lion and the Castle's defense drones. In addition, he's the team's sharpshooter and ranged weapons specialist. He's shown to be a skilled marksman with his bayard rifle, able to time hard to make shots perfectly. He's also an underrated strategist, responsible for a good number of Team Voltron's successful plans.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths: In addition to the skills listed above, Lance is a great team player who is trustworthy and reliable. He's competent under stress, and can easily improvise his way out of a tight spot.
Weakness: He's easily distracted by a pretty girl, prone to bouts of self-doubt. He doesn't tend to let his insecurities out around others though, which leads to him bottling them up a lot.

Items:

Lance will arrive wearing his Blue Lion Paladin armor, which includes a headset radio that links up with his teammates, and a retractable helmet that seals to let him breathe in space. He will also have the blue bayard, a handheld weapon that activates only for the Blue Paladin of Voltron, and transforms into an energy rifle capable of making precise, long-range shots. In addition, he will also arrive with two changes of clothes: his typical jeans+long sleeved tee+hoodie jacket look, and his color themed Paladin jammies, complete with Blue Lion slippers.
He will also have a totally normal Earth cow, named Kaltenecker, who rides a small hoverboard, and was purchased at an alien mall retailer specializing in bizarre Earth novelties.
He will be quite distressed to find that he has not, in fact, arrived with his Lion.

[ As the video feed from his TAB switches on, the most prominent view is a close up on one blue eye as Lance gets a closer look at the device before he realizes it's actually already recording. ]

—Whoa, okay, is this thing on now? [ He pulls the video back so that his face is properly in frame, and flashes what he obviously thinks is a charming grin. ]

I'm Lance. Pilot of the blue lion, Paladin of Voltron, master sharpshooter, [ He pauses for a moment to make double fingerguns at the camera. ] and kind of a big deal.

I'm here to offer the ladies of this fine planet a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to know me, one on one, while giving me a tour around this place so I don't get totally lost again. Unless I get lost staring into your eyes, of course.

—Oh, and uh, for anybody else who might be watching, uh… no one's happened to see any giant robot cats around, have you?
